World Student’s Day is celebrated every year on the 15th of October as a way of honouring the Late De APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of India. Despite being known as World Student’s Day, it is not known to be celebrated anywhere outside India and the widely spread misconception of it being observed by the United Nations also seems to be false. The day is celebrated solely in India as it recognizes the impact Dr Kalam had on the educational landscape of India. 

World Student’s Day 2024: About “People’s President” Kalam

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was birth to a Tamil Muslim family in Rameshwaram and graduated from St, Joseph’s College located in Tiruchiparalli. He then studied at the infamous IIT Madras where he gained his knowledge in aerospace engineering and then joined the Aeronautical Engineering department at DRDO. By 1990 he became one of the most famous nuclear scientists in India. 

Kalam was appointed as the president of India on the 18th of July 2002 and was adored by the public during his presidency of five years. He worked as the visiting officer of IIM Shillong and was also an honorary fellow of IIS Bangalore and the chancellor of IISST. Kalam was the receiver of as many as seven honorary doctorates from around forty universities. He took his last breath in the Bethany Hospital on the 27th of July 2015 after suffering a cardiac arrest while he was delivering his lecture at IIM Shillong.

World Student Day 2024: The Timeline

World Student Day was first celebrated in the year 2010 in honour of former president Kalam, five years before he delivered his last lecture in IIM Shillong. Since 2010, the 15th of October 2024 has been celebrated as World Students Day remembering the efforts of Dr Kalam in the field of education and his dedication to his profession.

This year World Students Day is celebrated focussing on the empowerment of students and inspiring them to become the mode of change as leaders and innovators like Dr Kalam. The theme of “Empowering Students to be the Agents of Change” will be celebrated all across India and the role played by education in the transformation of students will also be highlighted along with the introduction of a sense of responsibility in the younger generation In the year 2023, the theme for World Students day was “FAIL: First Attempt in Learning” which highlighted failure as the first step to success and learning. In the year 2022, the theme was “Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity, and Peace which highlighted the significance of a better future and prosperity along with the significance of sustainable development.

World Students Day is celebrated in order to acknowledge the role of students as the future leaders of the nation and innovators who would make life easier and better for its citizens. The also highlights the general role and importance of education as the first step in the creation of a better world for the generations to come. As quoted by Dr Kalam himself, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’. This day honours his legacy and beliefs in the power of education.

World Student’s Day 2024 Celebrations

World Students Day is celebrated across India with schools, colleges and all the other institutions of learning hosting activities like seminars and workshops for students that inspire students and introduce them to the theme of the year. Some of the key issues being faced in the field of education are also highlighted in these seminars. 

Some institutions also conduct competitions like essay writing where students reflect on the ideologies and the inspiring life of Dr Kalam and write about how his teachings impact their personal and social developments.

Community services are also conducted by some institutions in order to introduce the students to the idea that the lower class of society depend on their leadership and innovation skills for a better quality of life. 

Knowledge events can also be held by the institutions in order to encourage students to achieve their dreams. These events may include talent shows, TED talks and so much more.
